Hi!

Hello, my name is Paw Klu Htoo. I am a transfer student from Portland Community College. I am currently majoring in Social work but I am still undecided. The ways in which I engage in pop culture are watching Youtube videos and browsing through social media. These tools have the power to not only connect but also speak to their audiences quickly, and in a short span of time, an example could be the ways in which people communicate through messaging. I think there are different forms of mass media that catch the consumers attention. For example, social media and Youtube advertisements have the ability to repeat and reappear constantly in our face so it is hard to avoid them. Overtime it grabs my attention and the desire to consume or get a hold of the products the creators sell. Meanwhile, billboards are less effective because I don’t see the exact same ads frequently, and this tactic of advertisement does not affect me the same way as repeated ads. The introduction of Mass culture not only encourages people but it also is able to reach audiences around the world; this creates more opportunities for big corporations to market their products. I believe that mass culture is a big resource which aids the seller in targeting specific groups of people with specific products. Living in a consumer culture, consumption is part of our everyday life and we view them as “normal” things, although we over consume to the point that we don’t realize our limitations.
